On Dec. 20, Chevron reported it discovered a leak in one of its’ wells in Robinson, P.A., a source reports. Authorities initially believed the broken pipe spilled two barrels of oil condensate, but recently realized the spill was greater than anticipated and as many as 80 barrels of condensate leaked from the pipe.

John Poister, a community relations coordinator for the Department of Environmental Protection, said the company is working towards determining the precise extent of soil contamination at the site. The DEP has also collected soil and water samples and will test them for contamination.

This mess comes at an inconvenient time for the natural gas industry, due to the recent environmental scrutiny the process has been under.

Robinson is located in Washington County.

Fracking linked to Washington County’s development boom

An article published in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that Washington County’s recent economic growth can be attributed to the expansion of the natural gas industry. According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, Washington County had the third-highest employment growth in the past year.

Interestingly enough, one of the most pressing monetary needs of the county is improving its’ water system.
