Opponents want to impose fee on lands leased for fracking

Fracking opponents in Maryland want to place a $10-per-acre fee on land leased for extracting gas.

The tax would be used to pay for the completion of a safe drilling study commissioned by Gov. Martin O’Malley last year. The bill is sponsored by Del. Heather Mizeur, a Democrat from Montgomery County.

A news conference, hosted by Mizeur and representatives from the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, will be held on Tuesday morning before the Senate version of the bill is heard in that chamber’s Finance Committee, AP reports.
